Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev (born 7 January 1942 in Pokrovo-Shishkino, Ryazan Oblast - died 25 November 2011 in Munich) was a Soviet weightlifter, two-time Olympic gold medalist, 8-time World Champion, 8-time European Champion and 7-time winner of the USSR championship.

Interesting Fact

He is the only eight-time world champion and winner of two Olympic Games in the history of weightlifting. He set 80 world-records and 81 Soviet records. Vasily Alekseyev holds the all-time world record in the total of three lifts (clean and press, snatch and clean and jerk) - 645 kg (there are currently no official weightlifting competitions being held in these three events, therefore Alekseyev's record will remain unbeaten). Retiring from weightlifting in 1980, Alekseyev continued his athletic career as a coach of the Unified Team. He set another all-time record - under his leadership not one member of the team was injured or recieved a zero score.
